Quentin Final Shoot

I was really pleased with my final shoot, I felt the whole look pulled together well. Although i could only get normal black contact lenses as shown in the images above i edited the black eyes into the final images to portray the overall final look i was aiming for as i felt this was an important part of my overall design and if shooting the music video i would get these contacts. I feel that this look would work well for motion image within a music video as its a contemporary take on the gothic horror inspiration i feel that the demon elements i wanted to portray work within the styling but are not to scary that they wouldn't be relatable within a music video for my target audience (mainly teenage girls) i feel that using a male model attracts this audience and created another dimension that i enjoyed, creating male hair and makeup and feel that the overall look is exactly what i imagined. Although if i did it again i would have spent more time of the tattoo and even got in an actually tattoo artists to create the design.

Mood boards & Storyboards

Gothic Horror Mood Board
I have created a mood board on my understand of Gothic horror in relation to my final design idea's for Claudia and Quentin and were my initial inspiration came from when creating these characters. After receiving the brief for this project i instantly began a lot of my research through music videos and films within the horror gothic genre as this was the form that the final images would be for motion image. This of witch influenced my chosen film that i would base the main inspiration on for my design the film being Paranormal Activity 1 a recent horror film i chose it as i felt that i was something that scared me holding a lot of similarities to elements in the real world that scare the majority of people such as  elements being of the unknown the idea of mystery of life after death and the not knowing about bad or good spirits something people say to have experienced but no one really knows if its true or false. The idea of the unknown is something i feel scares many people in such a controlling society and further that this is one of Claudia's main worries is her fear of the unknown of the real world never wanting to leave her flat. Through my choice of film i was particularly influence through visual unsettling imagery featured on my Pinterest the idea of masking and not being able to see full forms furthermore the relationship in gothic horror imagery between fashion images and scarey horror images interested me and i was conscious to make sure my designs would suit fashion as i found the elaborate details in gothic fashion inspired me and reminded me of a lot of original elements within gothic horror such as structures of old detailed churches and derelict elaborate rooms.

Claudia Story Board
Below i have created my story boards for Claudia, My inspiration from the gothic horror title was the film Paranormal Activity the film explores a couples journey with a supposed paranormal happenings within there home and a demon ghost that has attached its self to the woman. I wanted to create Claudia's character to be a victim of these happening like she was possesed i began to gain inspiration from images of levitation and many of my images collected that inspired my design were inspired by The grudge one of the classic films exploring the life after death such as the images of the hair covering the face and the idea of string coming down from the lower lash line i felt that this symbol of the hair over the face creates the feel that the character is being possessed. Further being inspired by the femme fetale elements taken from original forms of gothic horror i brought in elements such as the perfect alabaster skin glossy dark lips and a sense of perfection within my design.
The styling i wanted to be gothic grunge to appeal to my target audience this style becoming more popular within fashion today with designers such as Alexandra McQueen leading the high fashion gothic style crowd.
I have included images that i imagine the music video scenes to include, such as the gothic kitsch apartment interior with elements such as hanging bits of material from the large windows in the apartment creating a claustrophobic trapped feel. I imagine that in the video Claudia would be sitting in front of lots of stacked televisions as shown in the mood board the lighting being created by these flickering screens, with Claudia looking very glamorous and almost non responsive. I imagine that as the video continues that the image would flicker and jump to zoom into different parts of her body creating this sense of intimacy and like someone is watching her i also imagine that behind her sitting perfectly that there would be objects levitating around her.

Quentin Story Board
My story board for quentin inspired through my development of Claudia's design idea with exploring the idea that Quentin is the demon that is possessing Claudia in her home, although Quentin is a figment of Claudia's imagination i feel that he is attaching himself into her imagination and won't let her forget him although she believes that he is being unfaithful she can't let go on him. I wanted his look to mirror elements within hers such as the Slick finger wave style of the dark hair, i further was very inspired by black out contact lenses i feel this instantly creates a demon like character my idea was that i wanted to show him as not a human but as this other form shown through my inspiration of line drawing tattoos to symbolises the fact Claudia created him in her head i further became drawn to slow shutter speed images something i imagine within the music video certain clips of Quentin to be like he is moving with this image motion behind him. I wanted my design to look striking and strong to show the grasp he has over Claudia within the video i imagine that he would stand over her and always be pictured behind her creating this uncomfortable atmosphere like he is the one possessing her making the  objects levitate and lights swing. I further found an imagine of ink emerging from someones mouth and could imagine that in one scene of the video this would happen like he is disintegrating as a form.

Music for the video

As my designs are finalised i began thinking about the music i would imagine with the music video, as the images are inspired by paranormal activity a modern take on the ghost awakening of the dead genre i wanted something eerie but still with that grungy atmosphere to it. My designs for the characters being inspired by grunge and the individual look inspired by an initial music video watched in class 'i fink your freaky' by Die Antwoord. Below are a few options i feel would match with the styling of Claudia and Quentin.

I love the xx angles remix and feel that when i listen to the song i imagine the styling of the Claudia and quentin in there dark gothic apartment. I imagine the video to be very broken up and static much like the image research i have previously done on slow stutter speed photography witch makes the image look blurred and shows movement. I visualise that they would be sitting around laying and looking very lazy with dirt and food laying around them contrasting with the very sleek perfect styling. I would also visualise in one scene Claudia's hair to levitate or various objects to begin to float as the music progresses.

Claudia Hair Practise

I wanted to experiment with my ideas for Claudia's hair and how feasible this actually was, my friend modelled for me although her hair was a lot shorter than that of the model i will use for my final shoot. I curled all the hair and pined it up to cool i then took a soft brush and brushed out all the curls i loved the soft shiny sleek look that the waved had. I experimented with the idea of levitating hair with hair spraying and straightning the hair although i did stand on end i felt the it didn't blend with the sleek smooth look of the rest of the waves and felt that that hair style is more effective perfecting the sleekness of the waves than trying to levitate the hair. I also feel that for the context of a music video the waves would appeal more to the target audience than the levitation of the hair and feel that in a video type context this may look slightly odd compared to in a static editorial image were i feel this would look very effective. I will further add in the pin curls and waves onto the face but i need to used gel to make the hair stick onto the face and hold in place as hairspray didn't hold.

MODEL for Claudia

I have chosen Elouise a family friend as my model she has had previous modelling experience as i wanted someone that could model in front of the camera. I love her facial structure as her big lips will suit my design i further love the natural shape of her brows. Although i had initially imagined my models hair to be darker i am pleased that Elouise has this blonde hair (recently died) with darker roots as i feel my makeup design will stand out a lot more and the sleek glam look i am aiming for can be achieved to a high level getting that very shinny perfect look as her hair is naturally thick and in good condition.

Quentin Final Face Chart

This is my final face chart for Quentin combining the eye and line drawing tattoo onto the neck.  I feel the combination explores all elements i have researched such as the dark feathered eyes symbolising the demonic persona Quentin holds furthermore the tattoo explores the idea that he is just a figment of Claudia's imagination as though she has drawn him from her mind but know he's turned into this element of her life she can't get rid of. I love the overall effect of the design and feel the look is very inhuman but the slight redness within  the lip creates that classic gothic horror blood dripping feel very subtly suggesting he is coming to life.

When looking at ways to incorporate the line drawing to represent that Quentin is a figment of Claudia's imagination but in some way he's possessing her like a Demond. From my initial thought of the characters and from inspiration from the music video 'i fink your freaky' watched in class i imagined the styling and certain characteristics to be grunge and slight heroine chic. I found the images about taken from my Pinterest and love the tattoo elements i through this could work really well creating the line drawing aspect like a tattoo combines in all elements i wanted to explore. When looking at my previous makeup experimentation i felt this needed to stay as it portrays the Demond like spirt i wanted to find ways of incorporating this idea, below i experimentd with neck tattoo's inspired by this line drawing image of a man.

Below i experimented on my brother the idea i was aiming for was to create a tattoo like design into the side of the neck inspired by line drawing. I found it difficult knowing were i should draw and felt that it looked messy and arty like rather than graphic and linear. On the bottom right hand side i looked at my model and decided to draw in what elements i liked such as the line running across the jaw and ear and free hand on paper the rest this made it a lot easier. I think there is more structure to this design i want to practise the whole look together although feel i need a precision pen liner to help with the application.
