Reference Mood Board

I created a mood board to take into assessment with me although i have already created my design and know exact ally what elements will be used were i wanted to have a few images of real veins, broken veins and scratches so i could relate back to them to get a really realistic feel.

Makeup Instructions Miss Havisham Assessment

Product list:

·      Krylon Foundation pallet- alabaster & FS 38

·      Illamasqua white foundation

·      Illamasqua satin primer

·      Duo eye lash glue

·      Supra colour pallet

·      Illamasqua translucent powder

·      Krylon Colour eye shadow pallet- RIO MATT

·      Vaseline

·      Glycerine

·      MAC Red Liner

·      Hair pin/Spatula

Instructions:

Step 1; Prep the skin to make sure all traces of makeup are removed and the skin is moisturised.

Mix together onto the back of the hand the Krylon foundation colours

-Three spatulas of alabaster

-Two of F8 38

-Illamasqua white foundation

And primers in together apply all over the face, neck and ears.

Step 2; mix up onto the back of the hand from the supra colour pallet the blue, grey, white and yellow to get a vein like shade. Paint on with a thin brush onto the visible veins mainly around the sides of the forehead and left hand side of the neck blend into the skin with a cotton bud.

Step 3; apply the Duo onto the main vein on the left hand side of the face and neck for the scratches.

Step 4; using the same colour as the veins pat this onto the lip and around the eye area to create the effect of dark circles.

Step 5; mixing from the supra colour pallet blue, yellow, red and the dark brow pat this around the eye area and to contour the cheekbones and nose.

Apply the same colour on the lip after puling the duo away from the centre of the lip and the right hand side. Apply the red to create a deeper blood like colour in the chaps of the lip.

Using the same colour stipple the red onto the apples of the cheeks and to create the cut like scratches onto the right hand side of the neck.

Further use this tone to create the effect of a broken vein onto the right hand centre of the cheek and the left hand side of the nose area.

Step 6; paint and blend in the blue vein colour over the top of the duo raised veins. And further the same tone over the top of the redy brown contour shade.

Step 7; Apply the skin tone shade from the supra colour pallet onto a disposable brush and brush into the brows and lashes do this again with the grey shade to build up the colour.

Step 8; apply the red liner into the inside of the eyelids and blend in with a cotton bud.

Step 9; powder over the vein and eye area and any other areas to stop the products creasing apply the Krylon eye shadow pallet blue and yellows to enhance and build tones already created then apply the Vaseline over the highlights of the face particularly around the forehead, eye area and down the centre of the nose then use the glycine to enhance this.

Hair Instructions for Miss Havisham Assessment

Instructions;

Step 1; section the hair from back of the ear to back of the opposite ear/ at the front middle section of the face leaving out the side sections/ and the top section at the back clipping all out of the way.

Step 2; (prepping of the hair before assessment) brickwork curl the back middle section, crimp the rest of the head keeping in the desired sections.

Step 3; back comb each side brushing out the crimp/ curl and pull back into a French pleat in the centre of the head making sure its secure.

Step 4; taking the back section at the top of the head wrap in the padding and pin into place pulling out small sections of the hair to backcomb repeat this over the whole top of the head (5 roles should be created) the very front role should sit over the forehead.

Step 5; place in the flowers as showed in the picture pin in place if needed, cover in talc and the grey shadow spray the front of the hair and place so wet bits of hair curled onto the face.

Step 6; Curl the loose sections of hair around the bottom of the neck and backcomb and hair spray to create decaying texture.

Step 7; pin in veil at the back of the head underneath the last role.

Final Face Chart Miss Havisham

After my practise on my partner i drew up my final face chart with the veins and colourings all in the correct place as when matching up her natural veins this will be the same on the day of the assessment and i can us this face chart as a reference to this. 

I am pleased with my final face chart taking inspirations from all areas of this topic and combining a variations of different techniques we have learnt in class to create my own visualisation of Miss Havisham through my own research mainly from visual reference points to images i feel relate to the characters characteristic my interpretation further contextualising this through my historical research of the victorian era. I see Miss Havisham as a manic but delicate decaying woman shown though my chose of a dusty blue colour pallett and transparency of the pale veiny skin. She is also very intimate and dlicate often showing people how she truly feels taking these inner feeling out through self harm such as the scratching on the neck and picking of the lips. The oily sweaty skin to me symbolises her psychological harm and waiting for something of that day she will never get back even if she dose try to halt time.

Accessorise Miss Havisham

I brought my material from a fabric shop and decided to experiment creating a high lace neck looking wedding dress as the photos will only be head shot it dose not particularly matter if it is clipped at the back as this will be covered by the veil.
With the same material i created a veil using tea bags to die the material i further cut holes and created a wore effect with the material to symbolise the passing of time, i added flowers at the top to cover the clip that i used to gather a sure the top together.

I used the tea bag technique also to die the flowers i had previously brought and used a brown paint to add depth of decay to them.

Hair Practise of Miss Havisham on my partner

I was initially very worried how this design would work on my partners hair as her hair is a lot shorter than the person i had used to practise my design on but i was very pleased with the outcome. The crimping and backcombing effect worked well to give the hair volume and lift to cover the padding although i was using black padding which did show through a little but i will make sure for my assessment i have the correct colour and also the correct colour pins also as the black showed up in some of the images. For my final design i will add the veil at the back of the head and i was thinking of buying the same material to create a hight neck effect style wedding dress to it looks as though the collar is itching from the scratching on the neck.

Makeup Practise of Miss Havisham on my Partner

I practised my face chart design onto my partner it looked a lot different onto the face than the face chart but i feel this was due to the colours looking stronger on white paper than skin. I was really pleased with all of the elements in my design but feel that for the assessment that the colours and application of the tones needs to be stronger to show up as well on camera.

I further decided to build up the Duo onto the neck for the scratching thicker and not to use the Duo onto the cheek as this didn't look effective and pulled the attention away from the thin broken veins on the cheek it didn't work with them just gathered the colour together and looked messy.

The Vaseline worked well and would like to extend this into the hair to look as though its stuck onto the face using glycerine to enhance this. 

Face Chart Miss Havisham

As i haven't had a chance to yet practise on my partner i wanted to finalise my makeup design so that when i have my first and final practise on her before my assessment i will know exactly what i want to create and what products to use. I did a quick scribbled drawing of my hair design to see how they would look together also. 

I pulled together all the elements i had previously research through my mood boards within lessons and from my own reaserch and further techniques experimented with on my male friend before hand and combined them into the one face chart.Although i feel the colours look a lot darker on the paper i feel my design is effective i like the way the blue is used through out and the base created the yellow tones i liked within my mood board of inspirational images as the blue colour pallet was the main element i wanted to look at when creating my characterisation of Miss Havisham and the red contrasts this. 

I decided to use screeching onto the neck to look as though Miss havisham has been itching from the veil/ wedding dress, and build up the veins from the neck to the top of the forehead further using my idea of transparent delicate skin by using broken veins onto the  cheek and side of the nose.

Within my design i also wanted the face to look very sweaty and shiny as though she's been sitting in a ice cold room over the oil lamps but i will experiment with this tomorrow onto my partners face to get the full effect using Vaseline and glycerin.

Miss Havisham's Hair development

While talking to seema this lesson I realised that I should achieve a characterisation through 'contemporary' features meaning not to contemporise the look but to create a new Miss Havisham something using the ideals and elements we have in our head and create the shape and texture through our visualisations using what we've leanert in class (Victorian elements) as a base to build our visualisations onto. 

This got me thinking about the design i created last week, my reaserch and the development of this below are some elements i wanted to change;

-Larger structure 
-No holes

-Build texture 
-Decay/ pull apart 
-To add leafs and flowers to represent Miss Havisham's delicacy and my interpretation of her character within the veins in the skin mirroring those in the leafs and flowers.

I went and brought some flowers from ikea i found some very good fake ones with vein like patterns through the leafs i plan to decay these by painting them and using tea bags to die the colour. I used fake flowers as to make sure when recreating Miss Havisham i they will look the exact same.

I further began taking all my elements i wanted to change and experimented with my friends hair to see the different effects. The first design i did below i loved, i structure and shapes formed using padding to create hight and a larger shape i felt was effective i also using a crimping technique to add texture as when back combed it created a lovely fluffy texture of which i used to create a fluffy layer over the top of the whole structure i further added talc to give the dusty old effect. Although this worked very well on my friends hair i am not used to my partners hair as i remember it to be very thin, short and furthermore blonde so the whole look could have a very different effect i will have to assess this when i practise on her hair and if the same effect is not portrayed i will develop the design around this.

I experimented with pinning a lace top i had to create a veil at the back of the head to represent the day Miss Havisham will never let go of i like the positioning of the veil as it docent interfere with the hair style. I would like to use this in my final interpretation of the character i will collect a some material and decay the veil discolouring it and adding holes and ladders to create the effect of passing of time.

Below i drew out some hair charts to use as reference when i practise this design onto my partner. 

Practising Veins & Chapped Lips

I wanted to practise the main elements within my design and really learn how to build up the texture and colourings within the veins and peeling of the lip. I practised on half the face on my male friend although this would look similar on a woman.
I really started building up the broken veins into the cheek and this inspired me to build a slight flush underneath to really pronounce the colourings with the blue veins and create contrast.
I was really happy with my colours within the cracked lip as i felt this looked very realistic and this peeling i could re create by just pulling and minipulating each side rather than seeing were the peeling would go and then this wouldn't look similar in my second creation of my Miss Havisham design.

I further experimented using DUO to create the raised effect of the vein on the temple and the cheek i really liked this outcome on the temple and feel i would like to incorporate this into my final design although the raised effect on the cheek looked out of place i would like to create texture but not as pronounced so i will just stipple the DUO onto the cheek instead of creating the raised vein.

Around the eye i used blue tones (supra colour) similarly to the veins but also added in slight hints of a browny red to create that tiered effect around the eye.

Colours & Technique;
Veins: Supra colour- blue,yellow,white & grey- powder Duo to create a more realistic feel.
Tiered eyes & Broken veins- Supra colour- red,brown, blue & white
Lip: Supra colour- red & brown- pat on vein colour onto the lips before applying the Duo to create the peeling effect. Then build up red tones for the cracked effect.

Materials for Miss Havisham & The silhouette

This weekend i was at home i began to pick up materials i found around the house and photographed them against a blue tone wall a similar colour to the tones i want to use within the base face colour for Miss Havisham. I had previously talk about creating silhouettes with plant materials to create a leaf like structure as i though about the time period it is likely that miss Havisham had flowers rather than leafs in her hair for the wedding day so i began finding flower materials- stems and leafs from flowers photographing them. 
The first two images are my favourite i love the atmosphere of the image the plant creating a web in the composition of the photo while the flowers are blurred out in the foreground. I love this plant as although the small flowers are delicate the stems are the main focus branching of into many different directions i feel this would look very effective in silhouette and also for my Miss Havisham character possibly spray painting them (ideally fake ones) a brown tone as though they have disintegrated and are dying within the hair. 
Similarly to the stem webbing effect of the first two images the last two also have this element also i love the shadow the sticks created in the image and in silhouette this could look very effective creating a stronger silhouette than the soft plant although in my Characterisation of Miss havisham i don't think she would have had sticks within  her hair possibly on stems from were flowers once were and this could be a good representation of that. 
The middle two image i took for reference of dyeing flowers something i would also like to incorporate as i feel this is an element Miss havisham would have had within her inital wedding hair style, possibly painting fake flowers for continuity of my character?

I experimented on my mum's hair what effect this would have although the images you can't tell particularly the effect in silhouette you can get a feel to how they would look. Although with in my research images above i loved the effect of the small plant i feel that its not as effective within the hair (top left image) this could possibly be because i would need more flowers and also the positioning of the flowers would need adjusting to work with my design rather than placed ontop. 
I love the effect of the sticks within the hair for silhouette although I'm not sure how they would hold but the shape that they create i feel is very effective.  

I further took an experimental image of the veil i feel this is an element i would love to use within my final silhouette images and my Miss havisham characterisation i would like to experiment more with the webbed effect in the veil and ripping. I also would like to experiment with placing of the veil i imagine that it would only cover a little of the face and hair possibly placed at the back central point of the head as not to take away from the strong structure of the roles. 

London Fashion Week with Mark Fast

I was lucky enough to get the chance to take part in London Fashion week working as part of the Bare Minerals artistry team creating the Autumn/Winter 2014 look for design Mark Fast. 
The experience i found so inspiering and it gave me a huge buzz of motivation and exitment for not only my future but also for what i am learning at the moment and were it could get me too.
The look for the show was all about that cold icy winters day walk creating a shiny almost wet look on the face yet still looking very natural and fresh with slight flushes of pink through the cheeks and lips.

Creating the look for the show (as seen above) inspired my own creation of Miss havisham having already learnt how to create that oily, sweaty look i would like to incorporate what i learnt during my experience at LFW into my on going project creating that icy cold feel onto the skin. As if Miss Havisham has been sitting in a ice cold room over the oil lamps thinking about her past and creating plans for Estelle's future i feel this would further emphasise my interoperation of the character being raw and senstive rather than over the top and grotesque.

I have been following the development of LFW and the looks that have been created, the shiny wet looks on the eye has been popular using earthy colours such as yellows and browny reds. This has further  been recreated by Val Garland and Charlotte Tilbury taken from my Instagram news feed below.
